Children's libraries in Leipzig

Children's libraries are places of discovery and diversity. As centres of kids’ culture they offer a wide and diverse programme of events, and their uncomplicated access offers the best possible equality of opportunity. The children's libraries regard their role as out-of-school educational partners to all facilities dedicated to promoting the well-being and education of children.
All our libraries have a wide selection of media for children and young people. The following libraries also have their own children's library:
The children's library in the City Library
The children's library in the City Library performs the function of a central library resource. With something like 25,000 items on an area of 450 m² it has an extensive collection for young people between the ages of 2 and 12 (including books, magazines, games, DVDs, CDs, and games for the computer and games console). Spacious facilities and cosy seating provide children and families with an inviting place to spend some time and read aloud.
Gohlis children's library
Children feel at home in the children's section of Gohlis library with its floor cushions and cosy chairs. Browsing, reading, reading aloud: the huge but manageable collection of books, comics, audiobooks, DVDs and Wii games offers something for every taste. Come and check it out for yourself! By arrangement our separate events room is available to day nurseries, daycare centres and school groups for special activities. In addition to regular tried-and-tested events we also feature new but already highly popular formats such as book casting and the bookslam.
Paunsdorf children's library
The junior readers at our library have their own dedicated area with an extensive collection of books, CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs etc. Thanks to the well-organised arrangement of items by subject, everything is easy to find. There's even a special shelf on the subject of "Happiness, anxiety, anger" as well as "Special picture books”. For those who are just starting to read there is material individually matched to the reading programme of the surrounding primary schools. Those who prefer to play will find board games for every age group. Every two weeks a reading ‘godmother’ reads to children in a separate and cosy corner of our children's library.
"Georg Maurer” children's library, Plagwitz
The heart of the reopened library in Plagwitz is the new Family Library with a big collection for children, parents and grandparents and with everything related to kids, parenting and education. For the very young the “Parent and child hour” takes place on the last Thursday of every month. Parents and grandparents can come with their 2 to 4-year olds and listen to stories, songs and sounds, and do creative things with their hands. Regardless of whether they are creating colourful pictures, playing finger or activity games or watching as the ‘hungry little caterpillar’ is fed, this occasion is great fun for children, who delight in joining in all the activities. And every two weeks the "Reading fun on Monday" series invites children to come and enjoy being read to. For older children the “Readers club” provides equally attractive activities in the winter and summer holidays and during the Book Summer.
The "Walter Hofmann“ children's library, Südvorstadt
Lots of families with children live in the south of Leipzig. As a result, the promotion of reading enjoys special prominence in the Südvorstadt library. The "Reading at twilight" sessions for the very young, the picture book cinema, the annual “Families’ day” or events for day nurseries and children always meet with a tremendous response. We have more than 10,000 books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, board games, Nintendo-DS games and other media available for our young library fans.
